In the third and final part of this story the plain soldier Ealdræd finds himself in the unaccustomed position of participating in a secret conspiracy with the most powerful in the land; the great Marcher Lord the Eorl Atheldun, the famed mercenary General Eádgar Aeðlric and, in a scold's bridle to ensure her silence, that extraordinary woman of most scandalous reputation, Maev de Lederwyrhta. Yet in this celebrated company it is the low-born Aenglian spearman who contrives to invent a workable plan, and so finds himself stealing covertly into the enemy camp by night armed with a casket of the insidious poison known as “Maev’s Malady” to set the Geulten army’s bowels to quaking.
