The mercenary General, Eádgar Aeðlric, has commissioned Ealdræd of the Pæga to escort the fugitive Bhelenese courtesan Maev de Lederwyrhta and her lady-in-waiting Mistress Bryony to the safety of deportation to her native country. But the great Marcher Lord, Atheldun, knows nothing of forgiveness or mercy and the word has been sent forth to assassinate them before they reach the Port of Picgowan on the north coast of Heurtslin. Even if they can somehow escape to sea, they will then have to face the prospect of the “Mariner’s Cauldron” and a truly devatating, tragic, unexpected death in the land beyond.
