Ealdræd must not tary in the Grand Duchy of Bhel and makes his escape through the marshlands of the Marécage, across northern Eildres, and into the vast empty plains of the Torvig Steppes where dwell the many barbaric and nomadic tribes of the Khevnic peoples. Happening upon a caravan of the Czechu folk under the despotic rule of the vainglorious Borislav Vsevolod, the Aenglian is welcomed as a much-prized foreign mercenary soldier. But when Ealdræd again finds himself beset by the gratuitous adversity of life, his impulsive decision to steal a Menghis rape-slave from the Czechu may have consequences that the sagacious veteran has not yet forseen.
