Having perforce journeyed long and hard since leaving Wehnbria, Ealdræd of the Pæga finally has the leisure to take his ease in the busy Piccolian market town of Pestoia, in company with his obscenely foul mouthed yet submissively respectful companion, the Menghis girl called Eiji. With neither of them able to speak the other’s language they must yet face the combined threats of abduction for Eiji and of death for Ealdræd when they become embroiled in what is rumoured to be some appalling secret form of alchemy practiced by the last survivors of the ancient aristocratic family of the Lasinni.
